Scarce first edition of this important compilation of popular songs (with notes by Gover). 299 pp, in a later binding of three-quarter leather and marbled boards, with marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Corners and spine ends rubbed, joints cracking, but binding still sound, text very clean. Bookplate of Alfred Fowler on front endpaper. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry on Gover notes that "his greatest enthusiasm was for the way of life and culture of the Dravidian peoples of south India, about whom he collected copious material" and "his collection of fast-disappearing indigenous material has continued to be of great value to scholars."
