Hardcover. Very good. Third edition, first issue, described on the title page as a "New edition, revised and corrected, with four maps." 4 1/4" x 5 7/8", [viii], 186 pp, with three maps inserted in the text (2 folding) and one in a rear pocket. Bound in original green cloth with decoration in black and gilt. Front hinge cracked (but holding), extremities lightly rubbed, small section at top margin of frontis map excised, folded map has small splits at folds. Third in an important series of Yosemite guide books issued by the California Geological Survey between 1869 and 1874. Currey & Kruska (61): “This series of Yosemite guidebooks influenced the literature on Yosemite which followed, becoming the frequent source of quotations in numerous other books about the region. " The 1874 edition incorporated improvements to the maps and added new information about the Yosemite region. " Farquhar (7f) notes that the three "pocket editions" of the guidebook "are attractive little volumes" that "contain a good deal of information that is still useful and are full of interesting historical allusions. Some of the matter relating to the southern portion of the High Sierra, to be found in [the 1871/1872 editions] is omitted in [the 1874], but this is compensated for by a revision of the information about the Yosemite region and improved maps. "
