Metropolitan Grievances or a Serio-Comic Glance at Minor Mischiefs in London and Its Vicinity
London: Printed by Charles Squire for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1812.
First Edition. Hardcover. Good+. 7.5" x 4.25", pp iv, 195, [1] (ad), in original paper-covered boards with printed paper spine label. Spine well worn, with some loss of outer paper, internally sound and clean, with the armorial bookplate of Herman Le Roy Edgar on the front pastedown. This satirical look at the trials and tribulations of urban life is particularly valued for the Cruikshank plate, titled "Grievances of London," which depicts a highly chaotic street scene. Published when the artist was just 20 years old, considered one of the earliest works to demonstrate full scope of his talent and wit.
