Memoranda of a Residence at the Court of London

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1833.

First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 9.5" x 6", 460 pp + publisher's ads, in original muslin-backed boards with paper spine label. Autograph note in Rush's hand tipped in on a front blank, reading "With Mr. Rush's compliments / to Dr. Koecker / Sydenham / near Girard College, / 8 May 1854." The inscribee is almost certainly Philadelphia dental surgeon Dr. Leonard R. Koecker (1822-1896), to whom Rush was introduced in 1822 by James Monroe and John Quincy Adams. Boards show wear and staining, front hinge starting, old repair to cloth on rear joint; good. "Rush served as the ambassador to Britain from 1818 to 1825. He negotiated the Treaty of 1818, which set the boundary between the U.S. and Canada and had discussions with George Canning that led to the announcement of the Monroe Doctrine" (wiki). Howes R-522) describes this volume as presenting "conflicting claims to Oregon and the adjustment of a Northwestern boundary line."
