First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine in a very good- dust jacket. First printing, with embossed stamp reading "Compliments of Alfred A. Knopf Inc" on half title page. 675 pp + index, with illustrations, tables. Mild bump to lower corners, else a fine copy in original cloth. Dust jacket has some chipping and short tears to edges, some loss at upper spine, which has been reinforced internally with archival tape, but remains quite presentable in a new mylar cover. A classic work on the politics of the American south that "explains party alignments within states, internal factional competition, and the influence of the South upon Washington. It also probes the nature of the electorate, voting restrictions, and political operating procedures" (later publisher's description).
