San Francisco: Kane & Cook Steam Book and Job Printers, 1878. 5.75" x 4", 58 pp (some rectos blank), with four full-page illustrations showing product packaging, in color-printed wrappers. Light dampstain visible at top edge of front wrapper, otherwise very good. Rare catalogue from this predecessor to today's Folgers Coffee brand, which was founded in San Francisco in 1850 as in the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills. In 1872, J.A. Folger bought out the other owners and renamed the company J.A. Folger & Co. In 1878 -- the year this catalogue was issued -- Folger formed a brief partnership with August Schilling. That partnership was dissolved in just three years later, and the company reverted to the J.A. Folger name. This catalogue offers green and roasted coffee beans, ground coffee, Japanese and Chinese teas, "fancy tin canisters" that "make a very attractive package from which to retail tea," whole and ground spices, and assorted flavorings. The Dalles, OR: Times-Mountaineer Book and Commercial Printing, 1899. 11" x 8.5", pp 122, [1], including index and local ads, with original unused order form at the front. Some creasing and tears to wrappers, minor water damage to bottom margin, otherwise very good. A.M. Williams was a general dry goods store founded in 1870, at which time it was just the second business in The Dalles. This illustrated mail-order catalogue is devoted primarily to clothing, shoes, and related accessories and to fabric and sewing items, but also offers rugs, bed and table linens, towels, jewelry, pocket knives, trunks, telescopes, and other miscellaneous dry goods. Advertisements from other Dalles businesses at the end offer farm machinery, bicycles, cameras, hotel accommodations, and steamer transport to and from Portland on the Columbia River. We find no individual A.M. Williams catalogues in OCLC, but note that the Oregon Historical Society holds the company's records. Item #23692

Sprague-Warner & Co. was found in the 1860s and grew to become one of the largest wholesale grocers in the United States. This grouping includes two catalogues of "fancy groceries," one dated 1884 (6.25" x 4.25", 54 pp + [23] pp of ads and index), the other (6.75" x 4.25", 32 pp) undated, but roughly contemporaneous. The third (6.75" x 4.25", 24 pp) is devoted tobacco (plug, smoking, fine cute, chewing), cigars, cigarettes, and pipes. Wrappers detached on 1884 catalogue, otherwise all are in very good condition. Prices are included only sporadically. Other than the display advertising in the 1884 catalogue, these are not illustrated. Grocery offerings include pickles, olives and olive oil, capers, sardines, pate, mustard, fruit preserves, potted meats, picked oysters, chocolate, Italian sausage, condensed milk, flavoring extracts, and more. Laid into the first catalogue is a small circular advertising Choclatina, a chocolate-based beverage with "decided nourishing qualities" manufactured by J.O. Schimmel Preserving Co. of Philadelphia and sold by Sprague, Warner. Item #23728
